Providing opportunities for members to exchange ideas, techniques, share in solutions to common challenges and concerns and encourage development of current and future student transportation professionals.
While instructing BBP/CPRFA classes I touch on a personal note and remind all participants how important they are to the department, to each other, and to their kiddos. This has opened up more conversation during the discussion part of the class. I feel it gives the drivers an avenue to express their securities and insecurities during these challenging times. It has been heart warming how genuinely dedicated all of my co-workers are.
I have done so many things to boost morale in the Transportation Department. Like most administrators it is costly and out of pocket. If anyone has good ideas please post.
One of my popular morale boosters was providing a permanent reserved parking spot, for personal vehicles, for employees with at least 10 years of service to the district and/or department. You could also lower it to 5 years, but it would depend on the size of your department and attrition.
By seniority, each employee chose their own spot anywhere in the parking lot (within reason, of course). If that is not possible, allow the employees to choose a parking stall for their school bus.
If your district has a "sign shop", ask to see if they will create a sign for each employee. If that is not an option, print a sign on paper and laminate it. You could also ask a local sign company if they would be willing to donate a small sign, in return, the sign company could put their own logo on it for free advertisement (e.g., "Donated by: ABC Company").
